Full-time, Day Shift, 7:00am-5:00pm; hours will vary and call will be required

POSITION SUMMARY: Assists is coordinating functions of Anesthesia staff. Acts as liaison between department staff and Administration. Administers anesthesia and related services for the surgical and obstetric departments. Provides support during crisis and critical situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates activities of Anesthesia staff to ensure appropriate coverage.
  2. Acts as liaison between Anesthesia staff and Administration to resolve department and personnel issues.
  3. Staffing and scheduling daily, monthly and annual projections for call, vacation and education/CME.
  4. Payroll completion, approval of vacation and CME through ADP.
  5. Performance evaluations reviewed and completed on annual basis.
  6. Budget process to include operational budgets, supplies, revenues and capital equipment projections and purchases.
  7. Quality improvement and monitoring of the pre/post-operative patient Joint Commission Standard PI.01.01.01.
  8. Quality dashboard for customer service, NPSGs (National Patient Safety Goals), quality monitoring, and financial review of department operations.
  9. Joint Commission regulations, preparation and review to ensure staff is prepared for survey.
  10. Leadership rounding with patients and staff.
  11. Communication, to include 0700 report at board, answering calls on anesthesia phone, assist with scheduling of cases when added on during the day, consults and other daily updates.
  12. Regularly communicates and consults with surgeons.
  13. Communication with administration minimally twice per month face to face.
  14. Other process improvement projects, such as first case on time starts.
  15. Committee attendance, Medical Staff; Patient Care, Surgery, Trauma and Perinatal. PIT Meetings for Joint Journey patients.
  16. Other committee meetings; Patient Care directors meeting, Department Director meeting, other meetings as recommended.
  17. Review Press Ganey customer satisfaction results and collaborate with surgical services staff on the focus areas for the quarter.
  18. Education and training opportunities for nursing staff, organize and delegate resource to assist staff with priority training needs.
  19. Lead monthly anesthesia meetings with written minutes sent to administration.
  20. Administers IV, inhalation and regional anesthesia to include: spinal, epidural, and peripheral blocks.
  21. Monitors vital signs and progress of surgical or obstetrical patients; recognizes abnormal patient responses and takes corrective action as necessary.
  22. Performs supportive life functions, including endotracheal intubation, management of blood, fluid, electrolyte loss and replacement, and maintenance of cardiovascular and respiratory functions.
  23. Completes all anesthesia records per department policy regarding patient visit, pre-anesthesia induction, equipment check, intraoperative vital signs, medications given and the post-op visit.
  24. Checks the anesthesia machine and related cart for optimal functioning and completeness prior to each case; cleans and restocks anesthesia equipment in OR's. Replenishes inhalant anesthetic agents; restocks drugs and verifies gas flow.
  25. Provides consultation, management and implementation of respiratory and ventilation care.
  26. Demonstrates ability to assess status of patient from neonate through geriatric; delivers the care appropriately.
  27. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Qualifications:
  • Associates or Bachelors degree from an accredited Nursing program and Graduate of Nurse Anesthesia educational program accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
  • Current Wisconsin license as a Registered Nurse and Certification from AANA as a Nurse Anesthetist.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Certification. Non-certified employees must attain certification within 60 days of employment in position.
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS & PALS Certifications. Non-certified employees must attain certifications within 180 days of employment in position.
Work Relationship:
  • Reports directly to the Vice President of Patient Care Services.
  • Extensive contact with Surgery staff, patients and families.
  • Works regularly with nursing staff, physicians and staff from other patient care departments.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed largely in a hospital environment.
  • Frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts or surgical equipment.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of radiation.
  • Regularly exposed to hazardous materials such as needle punctures, blood and body fluids.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Occasionally required to sit or climb.
  • Required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of department supplies and equipment.
  • Occasionally may need to move patients and/or equipment of more than 100 pounds.
  • Requires specific vision abilities for far vision, near vision, depth perception, colors, accommodation and peripheral vision.
  • Vision correctable to 20/40.
