Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potientially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Perform injections of chemical compounds and behavioral tests in mice. Collects, calculates, and analyzes data. 
  • Maintenance of mouse breeding colonies and related documentation
  • Tissue (mainly brain) dissection in mice and preparing brain slices.
  • Performs or assists with cellular and molecular assays including cell and nuclei isolation as well as isolation of RNA and DNA.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment; write protocols
  • May train new student assistants or volunteers
  • Other tasks as assigned

  Four years of laboratory experience in the field of research. Experience with maintaining mouse breeding colonies. Experience with rodent stereotaxic surgeries. Experience with cellular and molecular assays. Knowledge of a programming language. Working knowledge of TTUHSC policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications
